The future of Canberra

22 Dec 2015

I believe that the next four years will be crucial in shaping Canberra for decades to come.

We need to shape a way of life that provides economic opportunity to different generations of Canberrans. We need to build a city that is both liveable and affordable. And importantly, we need to battle the global threat of climate change right here in our home town.

These are the challenges that face us as we enter 2016. I want to take them up by investing and innovating in our suburbs, in our public transport networks and in our local business districts. Canberra needs a new stadium and a new music venue that puts us on the map for touring artists.

Education is of particular importance to me. I have been privileged to attend great public schools right here in Canberra, and the Australian National University where I would study mathematics.

The future of Canberra will increasingly depend on the digital economy and the skills that underpin it, and so I believe that the next Labor Government must make getting more computer coding classes in our schools a priority. We need to help the teachers of Canberra be the best teachers in the nation and ensure our kids are getting to class with breakfast in their stomachs.

The town centre is the heart of Gungahlin. It must become an economic hub if our city is maintain its prosperity. Drawing good jobs away from Civic is achievable only by connecting Gungahlin with world class transport and digital infrastructure.
