Last week, the Canberra Liberals sought to paint the ACT’s journey to drug decriminalisation as secretive and non-consultative.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
In fact, both the Canberra Liberals and the ACT Greens ‘quietly’ supported my calls for drug law reform during the election campaign.
Check out Jeremy’s Hanson’s speech in support of the expansion of the simple drug offence notice, 58 days before the 2020 election.
And take a look at Shane Rattenbury’s speech from the same day where he raves about the potential positive effects of the simple drug offence notice.
It’s clear to me that the Canberra Liberals were trying to hide their conservatism in the lead up to the election, and the Greens didn’t want to acknowledge progressive Labor policy.
Drug decriminalisation was not done in secret.
And the sky won’t fall in this coming October when the legislation finally comes into effect.
