I am pleased that the ACT Government has today reassured the community that it remains committed to delivering a cinema in Gungahlin.
Eleven years ago, the vacant land at the corner of Efkarpidis Street and Hinder Street in Gungahlin was released by the ACT Government for a cinema development.
Since then, the project has been plagued with avoidable delays.
The Planning and Land Authority has worked diligently to support the developer in their endeavours, but they’ve now been stonewalled. To date, the developer hasn’t been operating in good faith, but it’s not too late to change tune and get this cinema done.
The people of Gungahlin deserve more than metal fencing and a barren patch of dirt – they deserve a fully operational cinema in the heart of the Town Centre.
The motion passed today called on the ACT Government to:
- urgently explore options to facilitate the development of the cinema, noting that the current developer is failing to fulfill their obligations under the Deed and commitments as part of DA201936502;
- explore ways to secure development for the site that will include cinema works as soon as possible;
- reassure the Gungahlin community that our commitment to deliver a cinema is genuine, despite the inactivity and unresponsiveness of the current developer; and
- report back to the Assembly.
I look forward to hearing more from the ACT Government regarding the next steps that they will take to secure the development of the site.
